Visit to the Night Shelter

As the onset of winter begins, it is always the people on the periphery that are affected. Being on the committee of the Shelter for Urban poor at the last meeting it was decided to visit the winter shelter. Along with the Principal Secretary Urban Housing and Development department and the Commissioner – Patna Municipal Corporation a visit to five shelters took place. As we moved around and visited the shelters, we interacted with the inmates. Most of them were on the whole happy as they had a warm place to sleep in. The quality of the blankets was not up to mark and directions were given by the Principal Secretary to get them changed. A fire kept burning outside each shelter to warm up the people, so that with that warmth they could get into bed. The biting cold and westerly winds seemed to blow strongly. As I journeyed home, I could not but think of those who were forced to sleep in the shelters and the many others whom we saw sleeping in the open under their rickshaws. I said a prayer that they would find some warmth and human kindness.
