An initiative to eliminate poverty/hunger
17, October, is being observed as the day to work towards the elimination of hunger/poverty. While we live in a prosperous land, where Mother Earth give us enough to sustain us, yet our people experience hunger. Unfortunately, in the hunger index we are rated 107 out of 110 countries. Even our neighboring countries have faired better to our utter dismay. There is an unequal distribution of wealth and those who have, enjoy more than they need, those who starve are in a difficult situation.
To stand in solidarity with this situation our entire team of 10 full timers fasted for the entire day. at the end of the day we distributed food packets to our community at ‘Adalatghat’ who have been evicted and are forced to live under the open sky. This community has been residing at he spot for near to four generations. Most of them are elderly, maimed, blind and for their livelihood they go around begging. Yet the administration are blinded to these people and came with bulldozers to evict the community. The irony of it all is that the judge of the civil court has ordered the eviction we do not know on what pretext. It becomes the whims and fancies of any one with power to evict people without offering alternative sites for their settlements. To even try to understand the pain and insecurity of these 75 families is enough to experience sleepless nights. But alas, some of us do not have hearts that can be opened to human suffering and agony.
