Candle march to express solidarity with victims of atrocities
The news that shocked the nation about the murder of Asifa in Kathua, Jammu was a real question how safe women and children are in this country. There has been a terrible upheaval both at National and International level and people are asking why this is happening.
When things were explained to the community and we reflected together, all felt that we need to talk about this and agreed to join the rally to express solidarity. Some young girls also joined in the candle march. At this point of time there is a growing insecurity in the country among parents as to how safe are their children when they travel to school; how safe is a girl or woman on the streets.
The women gathered near Kargil Chowk and as they assembled the onlookers came with questioning eyes or with curiosity to know what was happening. This disturbed us when such an issue had become headlines in most dailies how is it that some of the passersby in the township of Patna were unaware of this reality.
We moved around Kargil Chowk with lighted candles and shouted out slogans about the inability of the central government to ensure security to its citizens some group on the opposite side vehemently shouted back in support of the government. In such a volatile situation a peaceful march would have turned violent if the police did not appear at the right moment and stopped the opposite party from engaging with us. It was at his moment the women got agitated and each of them powerfully shouted back at the men and proved their collective strength and power.
In conclusion the Gathering sang the song, we shall overcome,…we shall not be moved…..there will be peace around….
