Demolition at Kaushal Nagar

It has always been a matter of development vs rights of people. Though we talk and believe that we all share the same planet, yet we know that this is not true. As always in the name of development for the rich the poor are being pushed out of cities, their homes demolished, their livelihood snatched, their security is at stake and they thrown open to the vulnerable world. The irony of the demolition that took place at Kaushal Nagar was a shock to the people. They had been living at the given site for some four decades and then because some bureaucrat wanted to have a road so that they could go for a walk or avoid the shanties. It is pathetic that the city makers do not seem to have any sort of dignity. Their rights can be violated and they can be so easily disrobed of their dignity. A representative body met with the District Magistrate and apprised him of the situation and though he ordered the SDM to look into the matter nothing has come through. We managed to distribute plastic sheets to protect them from the open sky. Civil society groups continue to stand by as spectators to this drama that is unfolding before them.
