Jaanta Samvad
Over a period of nine to ten months there has been a very serious eviction drive across the city. Communities have been stripped of their homes and livelihood. There has been an inhuman approach to this entire operation. Running from pillar to post, knocking at every door be it of the administration or the legal bodies there was no respite from anywhere. Hundreds of people have gone missing, where have they gone, is no one’s responsibility. An insensitive government and administration and an equally unconcerned civil society makes one feel disgusted and disappointed . A public hearing (Janata Samvad) was organized by Aashray Abhiyan with the support of
Anti eviction support cell.
Representatives of different communities placed their struggle – those evicted were Lalti devi from Gardanibgh, Kailash Sahani from R Block – Khush Kumar from Dhobi Ghat Urmilla devi from Railway Crossing. The next group who placed their story were those under threat of eviction – Saraswati devi from Malaai Pakkdi; Ranjan from Gayatiri Mandir; Avdesh Pandy from Rainbow Field, Rukmini devi from Sahgaadi Masjid. Their story of struggle was heart breaking of how against many odds they survive.
The guests who came from the
Anti eviction support cell – commented that they were able to experience the struggle of the people and their desire to fight for their rights. Some suggestions were given and we hope to try to awaken civil society and make them more responsible.
