Meeting with representatives of ‘city makers’
We continue to grapple with the issue of eviction and the insensitivity of the bureaucrats towards the plight of our people. During our weekly meeting we decided that we should meet with the representatives of our people in our office. Through the space was insufficient, it challenged us to make space to accommodate at least 10 to 12 people at a time.
This time was very valuable as we could address the issues and work with strategies to awaken our people to become agents of awakening the others in their community. This sort of capacity building and giving them the needed recognition was a powerful insight to take our struggle forward. Each of the persons who came were invited to look into the future for their children as we continue for demanding our rights as a collective.
At the same time we were in a position to address individual issues and find a way to solving some of them. For the people it gave them an importance and recognition and there was an ownership of the program. We were also able to help them to take responsibility for programs and mobilize people for the event.
Meeting the vendors and construction workers has also been a way to assure them of the dignity of their labor and that they are important for all of us. We helped them to shift their focus from looking only at their issues but to take the bigger picture of the future of their children I mind especially the girl child and to ensure that they are skilled before they are married off.
