Meeting with construction workers
Construction workers are an integral part of our organization. Meeting them daily at different points in the morning where they gather together with the hope of getting work. This meeting brings us face to face of some of the hardships that they are facing.
One of our efforts s to get he government to put up shelters for the construction workers under the NULM (National Urban Livelihood Mission) scheme. There was a good discussion around this and the workers came out with suggestions as to where we should have the shelters. We motivated them to take p the responsibility of the shelters. They have to be empowered to see how this works.
We are going to place this on the 22nd and demand for a shelter in two places – Siphara and Panchmukhiya Mandir. Since Dorothy is a member of the SUH (Shelter for Urban Homeless) constituted by the Principal Secretary of Urban Housing and Development department under the direction of the Supreme Court, she will have the opportunity to place this at the appropriate fora.
The workers were encouraged to ensure that the spaces where they gather should be secure and should not be grabbed by the corporate or other bodies.
Finally, the decision was arrived at to celebrate “International Worker’s Day” on the 1st May at the office and to put up some shelter. Since it is their day all the workers promised to attend the Gathering in huge numbers.
