Working People’s Coalition
94% of India’s population works in the informal sector, which means they have no steady income. They get paid for the work they do. They are daily wage earners who may get work for 10 – 15 days I a month. Their insecurity, inability to earn everyday puts them in a difficult situation. Over the years we have been motivating people to look for alternatives, especially those who work on construction sites, building roads and huge structures. While we have entered into the life of the construction workers the plight of the unorganized sector is pathetic. Though they comprise of 94%, yet we know that they are unable to garner strength and come together. The need to work becomes so important as they do not wish to lose an opportunity for work. Keeping in mind the gravity of the problem, we were happy to join the initial meeting of this coalition, so that our concerns can find space in the many collective activities of a wider group. We hope tht we can raise common issues across the country. One of importance is ‘Universal minimum wage’ for workers across the country. We hope this will bear fruit as the voices of the grassroots can reach center placae.
