Celebrating Constitution Day
At a time when there are so many speculations about the future of our Indian Constitution, it was only fitting to spend time among the most vulnerable communities with whom we work. The community at Adalatghat whose ancestors had been living in this area for the past more than 100 years were suddenly evicted and told they had to go from there. The Indian constitution guarantees to its citizens, under Article 21 states that
“No person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to a procedure established by law.” Thus, article 21 secures two rights: 1) Right to life, and 2) Right to personal liberty. In spite of all these provisions the government has no qualms of conscience in evicting people and leaving them under the open sky to fend for them.
On this day we gathered the people together and addressed them about their constitutional rights. People listened attentively to what was being shared with them. They live in hope that someday they will get a roof over their heads.
In order to express our solidarity with them, we shared a meal, showing that we are equals and share the same common home. Though we may be different economically yet we stand in solidarity with them.
