Celebrating Labor’s Day
International Labor day was celebrated on
01, May at Kargil Chowk. Though the rain poured down in torrents and for some time it felt that it would the program would be called off. But as we waited patiently getting wet, taking shelter under the tree and the banners, after sometime the sun came out.
The program was a signature campaign, to sensitize the general public to the plight of the construction workers. Though most of the schemes have been passed by the Board of the Labor department, yet they still need to be materialized.
There seems to be a growing indifference in the government departments about the plight of the workers. The ban on sand did affect most of them as there was no work for
approximately 6 months and the construction workers were dismayed by what was happening. It was around this time to be precise that in
August 2017, that representatives of the workers and organization met with the commissioner and demanded that efforts be made to lift the ban at the earliest possible date.
As we began the signature campaign people of all walks of life came forward to support the cause. It was heartening to see the young and the old coming forward to support this cause.
At the end of the day we collected near to 1000 signatures and we hope that the government will pay heed to our pleas.
