Honored at the Bihar Legislative Assembly hall

In the midst of violence being meted out to women across the country; her body disrespected and she being disrobed, serious questions occur to my mind. How long will women become victims of violence of the patriarchy mindset that perpetuates domestication?

The Hindustan times along with Roof Foundation decided to honor women in Bihar who have been contributing towards the emancipation of women. Nine women who had contested and won the village panchayat elections along with another 10 women from the social sector were awarded certificates by the minister of Panchayati Raj, Shri Kedar Gupta, ex-Dy Chief Minister of Bihar Shri Tarkishore Prasad.

Speaking on the occasion Ritu Jaiswal, of the Rashtriya Janta Dal, challenged the minister about how the power of the panchayat and Assembly has been seized by the ruling party. How can the elected representatives of the people do any development when the funds are not available?

She further went on to say that women have to really become empowered and change things. To the men sitting on the dias she said, you have all come into this world through the womb of a woman. Men should not underestimate the power and strength of women. Hailing women as makers of society, she encouraged women not to be afraid of anyone but to make space for themselves and discover her strength.

Receiving the award from Shri Tarkishore, he remembered Dorothy who had met him on at least three occasions to update him about housing for the poor. It is great to be recognized and acknowledged when we stand on the side of the ones whose voices need to be heard. Of greater importance, is that when you are remembered for your stand? It surprised me to an extent as he continued to share with the other minister on the dais and when Ritu Jaiswal mentioned I her address, your work among the homeless communities.

All these are memories that give us an incentive to continue to work and stand on the sides of those whom we are called to make a difference. To this end may the God of our Journeys, help us to walk the unbeaten path with strength and vigour.
