Installing hand pumps in settlements
‘jal hi jivan hain’- water is life….this is a slogan that we have down the ages been listening to. Water had been in abundance earlier but today it has become a rare natural resource. The reasons being that we have felled trees, cut hills and have in a away wasted this rich resource. To understand the plight of people who are denied this resource we find long queues of people standing near the public taps, women walking long distances to collect water from villages.
The lack of water to people living in the city, who live in difficult situation with houses, made of grass and bamboo is very pathetic. We were shocked to see muddy water being drunk by them. We made efforts to identify agencies that would support this cause. With good friends, we were able to install three hand pumps in three settlements. The smile on the face of the young girls and women were so heartening, as they said now we can have clean water. We are but an instrument and pray with gratitude to our benefactors and we hope in the future we will be able to install more hand pumps as the need is still great.
