International Human Rights Day
Today in the face of many violations to the citizens of this country, there is a need to safeguard our rights. The rampant eviction of homes of the poor on the basis of encroachment has become the order of the day. We tried to organize a rally from Kargil Chowk to the Governor’s house. The letter with information was sent on the 7th and received with signature. Suddenly on 8th, we were told from the Control room that we could not hold the rally as it is restricted area. Then we decided to take another route and it was not allowed….even a human chain was not permitted.
However, we were not to be deterred by all this….we had already informed the people and as they turned out in huge numbers, we moved inside Gandhi Maidan and in front of the statue of the Father of the Nation. The communities sat on the steps and listened to all those who addressed them. Once again we had to motivate them to make sure that they will keep their unity and oppose all kinds of divisions.
As we formed human chain and shouted slogans against the violation of human rights, it was a moment to experience our collective strength.
