Opening of temporary shelters in winter
Being a member of the committee of the
‘Shelter for Urban Homeless’, it becomes my responsibility to ensure that shelters are set up. Working closely with the urban housing and development department, identifying places where the homeless assemble in the night. Eight temporary shelters have been set up in different parts of the city from November to mid March. The shelters provide wooden beds, bed sheets, mosquito nets and blankets for each person. The capacity depends on the space available and the number of homeless in the area. The maximum capacity is
50 and the minimum is 25 beds. Visiting the homeless in these shelters provides an opportunity to get to know the struggles of the people. Some of the people are destitute, some three women have been coming to one of the shelters for the past three years and we are exploring possibilities of getting them some permanent solution.
