Using encroachment to evict the ‘city makers’
One just wonders to whom does a city belong, is it the ones who make the city? To the ones who with their skill beautify the city and yet have no place to rest and protect themselves from oppressive weather conditions. It seems there is perhaps a hidden agenda to make cities free of the poor, free of settlements. It is so ironic that the ones who give their sweat and blood are treated unjustly and have no right to the city. In this scorching heat when the mercury is touching near to 40 degrees, settlements area being razed to the ground, on the pretext of cleaning the drains. Ironically, the government spends crores of rupees to build flyovers, bridges and parks but has no money to cover drains. This is a real excuse; land belonging to big concerns and govt. offices are constructed on covered drains but the houses of the poor have to be destroyed year after year and cause immense pain and inconvenience to them. Who will change this system is anyone’s guess.
