Worker’s Day
Worker’s Day has always been celebrated with the workers at the points where they are met throughout the year. This year we gathered together at the Beur Chowk along with the construction workers who were assembled in huge numbers.
The chief Guest for the occasion was Dilip Patel, from Kurthol, who is a social worker. It was heartening to listen to the issues of the workers, who took the courage to speak up and speak out about how they find it difficult to get work and then to sustain their families.
This was an occasion to create awareness about the schemes that are available for them. Therefore, it is important that they get registered in the Labor department of the Government of Bihar. Once they are registered, they get the labor card; they are entitled to avail of the schemes.
Since we were having the program at the point where they collect, it was a bit difficult to get them to concentrate as they were getting distracted with the contractors coming to hire them for their work. However, it was an opportunity to create awareness among them about the importance to exercise their franchise and to choose wisely.
After a few of us addressed the Gathering, we served them with the local drink ‘saathu’. There was an informal conversation after the meeting and then workers were happy that they were able to participate in the one day program.
